Visit Victoria Snags Helpmann Awards For Melbourne
VISIT VICTORIA SNAGS HELPMANN AWARDS FOR MELBOURNE
Visit Victoria has further cemented the State's position as Australia’s culture capital with the prestigious Helpmann Awards set to leave Sydney for the first time and take up residence in Melbourne.
The awards will take place in Melbourne from 2019 to 2021 and, like the Tony Awards on Broadway or the Olivier Awards in London, celebrate the artistic achievements and excellence of the national live performance industry.
A personality well known to Visit Victoria, White Night curator David Atkins OAM will lead the production of the awards as Artistic Director.
The Awards were established in 2001 by Live Performance Australia and named in honour of Sir Robert Helpmann.
“With so many great theatre acquisitions Melbourne has asserted itself as the culture and live performance capital of Australia and the industry are well aware, which is why it makes sense for Melbourne to host the Helpmann Awards moving forward.”Peter Bingeman, CEO Visit Victoria
Visit Victoria Chief Executive Officer Peter Bingeman said that as the most prestigious theatre accolades in the country there’s no more fitting place for the Helpmann Awards than here in Melbourne.
“With so many great theatre acquisitions Melbourne has asserted itself as the culture and live performance capital of Australia and the industry are well aware, which is why it makes sense for Melbourne to host the Helpmann Awards moving forward.”
“Visit Victoria has raised the bar for live performance in this country. We’ve secured theatre productions Come From Away, Dream Lover and Priscilla, and Melbourne was recently named the live music capital of the world.”
The importance of the visitor economy to Victoria cannot be understated, with more than 22,400 jobs having been created since 2014-2015.
Since its establishment Visit Victoria has secured more than 60 major events, 320 business events and supported more than 160 events across our regions.
