Rise of Esports: Melbourne Secures Australia’s Biggest Esports Event
Visit Victoria in partnership with TEG Live and ESL, will bring Australia’s biggest major live esports event to Melbourne this September, adding the global phenomenon of esports to our enviable world-class calendar.
With an audience of over 385 million world-wide, mostly in their teens or early twenties, the Melbourne Esports Open is set to attract a younger generation of visitors from interstate and overseas to Victoria.
Visit Victoria, CEO, Peter Bingeman said that the partnership will see the Open held in Melbourne until 2022 and attract the world’s best professional teams and players.
“The event will strengthen Victoria’s credentials in the digital games industry and tap into one of the world’s fastest growing sports and entertainment markets. Melbourne will be Australia’s home for esports.”

The Melbourne Esports Open will see a packed weekend schedule of top-level professional esports competition in arenas complete with giant video screens, full concert lighting and concert-level audio production.
The precinct will feature interactive gamer experiences and a huge showcase of the latest esports technology – great news for the 560,000 esports fanatics across Victoria.
This year’s event will be staged at Melbourne & Olympic Park, filling the likes of Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and the Melbourne Park Function Centre. The event will take place on the first weekend of September 2018 – the bye weekend prior to the AFL Finals Series.
It’s expected to generate up to $25 million for the Victorian economy over five years, supporting jobs and boosting local businesses.
Since Visit Victoria’s establishment in July 2016, the company has successfully facilitated more than 550 events, including more than 60 major events, 330 business events and 160 regional events.
