New Local Government Guide For Engaging With The Visitor Economy

Visit Victoria has partnered with Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) to produce a guide outlining how local government can support the growth of the visitor economy in their community.

The guide, created in conjunction with Regional Tourism Boards, provides insights into the current state of the industry, its importance to regional Victoria and a view into the future growth of the sector. It encourages local government to review investment opportunities in the visitor economy that aligns with regional and state priorities set out in the Victorian Visitor Economy Strategy.

Tourism has been identified at all levels of government in Australia as a top economic growth sector with the potential to become Australia’s fastest growing industry. Research indicates that visitor spend is a great contributor to all parts of the community, from supermarkets to cafes, retailers, petrol stations, laundry services and many more.

The visitor economy is also an important catalyst for spend on new capital investment and infrastructure, both public and private.

Visit Victoria Chief Executive Officer Peter Bingeman said that partnerships between local government and tourism and experience providers is the key to ensuring the sustainable growth of this dynamic industry.

“The visitor economy is a vital driver of jobs in regional Victoria, which is why it’s so important for all levels of government to be involved in supporting and growing this sector.”

“There is an undeniable connection between improving amenities for visitors and increasing liveability for all Victorians, that’s on top of the capital contribution that visitors make to towns and cities across the state.”

Victoria Tourism Industry Council Chief Executive Officer, Felicia Mariani said the guide highlights the importance of collaboration across all levels of government as key to continuing strong growth in our visitor economy.

“Our role at VTIC is to bring stakeholders together to drive the best outcomes for Victoria and to advocate for the prosperity of our thriving industry.

“This guide is a valuable resource for local government authorities and regional tourism bodies, reinforcing the importance of the visitor economy. Making a destination a better place to visit also makes it a better place to live. If a visitor falls in love with a place, they come back or could even potentially become a resident.”

The importance of the visitor economy to Victoria cannot be understated, with more than 22,400 jobs having been created since 2014/15.  Visit Victoria is working to grow the value of the visitor economy to $36.5 billion and provide 320,700 jobs by 2025.
