Visit Victoria employs 160 people in Melbourne and across key international markets. Our Melbourne office is in Collins Square, with satellite offices in London, Frankfurt, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Tokyo, Singapore, Los Angeles, Washington DC and Kuala Lumpur, and agency representation in Korea, India and Indonesia. 

About the Position

We are seeking a Corporate Counsel to join our supportive, collaborative and high-performing legal team. This newly created position, reporting to the Senior Corporate Counsel, will see you working in an organisation that respects the legal team and values the role the function plays in the overall success of the organisation. This is an important and impactful position and you will be supported and empowered to learn, develop and grow in your new role while working across a diverse range of matters. The role supports Visit Victoria and the Melbourne Convention Bureau. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Build strong collaborative relationships across the business, developing a high level of understanding of the needs and expectations of key stakeholders
  • Contribute to a proactive, collaborative, positive and solution-focused culture
  • Negotiate and draft key documentation including large scale funding and sponsorship arrangements, grants and lots of general commercial contracts
  • Provide support across a broad range of legal issues including general corporate and commercial matters, intellectual property, data and privacy protection, some employment law, procurement, information technology, advertising standards and other fields that are relevant to the industries in which Visit Victoria operates 
  • Develop and implement legal strategies and initiatives that are aligned with the organisation’s values 
  • With the support of the legal team, develop an understanding of the pressure points, strategy and objectives of the business and effectively communicate the risks and legal issues involved in any decision making
  • Assist with measuring and documenting performance against the privacy management plan
  • With the support of the Senior Corporate Counsel, develop key policy documents and build organisational governance capability through legal compliance risk assessment, making recommendations and guiding people leaders
  • Under the supervision of the Senior Corporate Counsel, brief and oversee the provision of legal advice from external service providers

About you

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Law
  • Qualified to practice law in Australia (current Practising Certificate)
  • 2-5 years post-admission experience

Experience and skills

  • Strong communication and influencing skills and the ability to listen and learn quickly
  • The ability to engage with a broad range of people across the business and establish strong and collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Solid technical skills, including an understanding of relevant legislation and common law, especially in legislation and regulations applicable to corporations, commercial contracts and privacy and data management
  • Excellent drafting skills and attention to detail 
  • Strong analytical and issue identification skills
  • The ability to think commercially and strategically and be pro-active
  • Excellent administration skills including time management, communications, decision-making, presentation, and project management skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in a wide range of legal topics including contracts, procurement, intellectual property, privacy, corporate and commercial, procurement and company operations and governance
  • Demonstrated experience in negotiating and managing complex commercial agreements and contracts
